Back in the early 1900’s, a rather extraordinary bread starter called the "mother dough" was created in a small town in the Pyrenees Mountains in southern France. As the story would have it, the mother dough was portioned out as a starter ingredient for each loaf of bread that was baked in the small village. Almost magically, this very special dough gave a tangy flavor so unique that the bread had to have its very own name.

Today, the California Goldminer name recalls the tale of the early goldminers who ventured west in search of fame and fortune. In the course of their travels, these pioneers broke camp, baking sourdough bread over an open fire. Quite the traveler herself, the mother dough starter journeyed with the settlers from locale to locale eventually settling in California, which is now home to the tangy taste of genuine sourdough bread.

To this very day, our master bakers remain true to the origins, beginning each loaf with a portion of the mother dough that has been carefully maintained and cultured since the early 1900’s. The dough is then mixed with fine ingredients including wholesome grains, caraway rye, fresh garlic and toasted onions—a union that gives each loaf its robust, unique flavor.
